Dalit's death in police hands alleged

RAJAHMUNDRY, APRIL 14. The death of a dalit, Mr. Nedunuri Satyanarayana, 35, of Ambajipeta, near Amalapuram, due to police beating has been alleged by Madiga Dandora leaders.

According to reports, Mr. Satyanarayana had quarrelled with one Mr. V. Venkateswara Rao over using a piece of land belonging to him. They had heated arguments and are said to have exchanged blows. But it was Mr. Venkateswara Rao who had lodged a complaint with the police, who summoned Satyanarayana for interrogation on Monday last. By the time he returned from the police station, Satyanarayana was a different man.

His wife, Satyavathi, alleged that her husband was beaten up by the police and he might not survive. He was admitted to a private hospital. He went into coma and died in the early hours of Thursday.

Leaders of the Madiga Dandora objected to the removal of the body from the hospital as also for conducting post-mortem till their demands were accepted. The demands included payment of Rs. 5 lakhs as ex- gratia to the wife of the victim and arrest and suspension of the SI, Mr. Sai Ramesh.

Discussions between the Dandora leaders and the SP, Mr. Venkateswara Rao, the RDO, Mr. Baburao Naidu, besides MLAs - Dr. Metla Satyanarayana and Mr. Ayyaji Vema - continued till late in the night Finally, the officials agreed to suspend the SI and pay Rs. 1 lakh as ex-gratia. The MLAs promised other benefits like land, house site and educational facilities to the children of the victim.
