CPI against Chhattisgarh State

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL, APRIL 12. The Madhya Pradesh unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) has firmly opposed formation of smaller States and said the resolution passed by the State Assembly in favour of a separate Chhattisgarh State would give rise to a never-ending series of demands for breaking the State into several small units.

The CPI has focussed attention on the move by the Assembly Speaker, Mr. Shrinivas Tiwari, to mobilise support for a separate Vindhya Pradesh state covering the area stretching from Datia district in northern Madhya Pradesh touching the Uttar Pradesh border to Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Rewa, Satna and Sidhi districts in eastern part of the State bordering Bihar.

Referring to the largely passive demand for a separate Mahakoshal State, the State secretary of CPI, Mr. Shailendra Shaily said these demands are politically motivated and aimed at diverting people's attention from the real issues.

Madhya Pradesh was reorganised into a large State in 1956 after a prolonged thought process had gone into this exercise, he said.
