Switch over to latest technology, Rlys. told
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, APRIL 14. Southern Railway can make use of the remote
sensing and global positioning systems available in the Anna
University to improve its operating efficiency, said the Vice-
Chancellor, Dr. A. Kalanidhi, here on Wednesday.
Participating in the Railway Week celebrations, he said as the
cost of these systems had come down, railways could switch over
to the latest technology for monitoring the movement of goods and
passenger trains. He suggested railway engineers to update their
technical knowledge through the internet-based education
programme of the varsity.
The Southern Railway General Manager, Mr. N. Krithivasan, said
the zone's earnings in the last financial year were Rs. 2,300
crores as against Rs. 2,111 crores in the previous year.
Completion of Tambaram-Tiruchi-Dindigul conversion, introduction
of additional trains/ extension of certain services, and specials
and augmentation of number of coaches in major trains had
resulted in improved passenger earnings. It had planned to
introduce telebooking and ticket booking through internet by the
end of this year.
He said apart from taking various measures to prevent accidents
at the level crossing gates, the zone had referred the problem to
an expert group in IIT to make an in-depth study and suggest
measures to reduce the accident rate, he added.
Mrs. Rajalakshmi Kalanidhi distributed individual awards to 199
railway personnel, group awards to 12 and efficiency shields to
29 departments.
