Rich tributes paid to Ambedkar

CHENNAI, APRIL 14. Joy, enthusiasm and fervour marked statewide celebrations of the 110th birth anniversary Dr.B.R.Ambedkar today. Leaders of political parties, social welfare organisations and trade unions paid floral tributes to Ambedkar's statues.

The day also saw rallies, seminars, poor feeding and distribution of sweets.

The Chief Minister, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, led the people in paying respects to the architect of the Indian Constitution by garlanding the late leader's statue in the port town of Tuticorin.

The day was celebrated with gaiety by Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University in Chennai. Mrs. Nagabhooshanam, Vice- Chancellor, garlanded a portrait of Ambedkar and distributed sweets on the occasion.

Chennai Port Trust officials led by the Social Welfare Minister, Mrs. Sarguna Pandian, garlanded the Ambedkar statue at the Port Trust Anchor gate building.

The Adi-Dravidar Peravai organised a procession in the City and presented a memorandum at Raj Bhavan addressed to the President of India maintaining that there was no need to review the Constitution and desired improvements could be effected through amendments.

The Tamil Nadu branch of the All India Confederation of SC/ST organisations conducted a seminar at LLA building here in which leaders of various political parties highlighted Ambedkar's contribution to the evolution of a new political and social order.

The Ambedkar People's Movement (APM) organised celebrations in more than 100 centes in Chennai. Mr. V. Balasundaram, APM president garlanded Ambedkar statue at Kodambakkam.

Other organisations which paid homage to Dr.Ambedkar included MGR-ADMK, All India Ambedkar Peoples Movement, State unit of Rashtriya Janata Dal, Tamil Nadu Devendrakula Youth wing, Ambedkar Munnani Kazhagam and Chennai Port Trust SC/ST Thozhilalar Sangam and Andhra Abhivrudhi Sangam.
