Periyar dam dispute
Sir, - A dispute of Almatti dam type is brewing between Tamil
Nadu and Kerala over raising the height of Mullaiperiyar dam. As
per the suggestions of the Central Water Commission, Tamil Nadu
has strengthened the dam in two phases but is unable to take up
the third phase of increasing its height by 9 feet to 145 feet
due to the objections of the Kerala Government. If there are any
genuine objections against raising the dam's height, Kerala
should convince the Central Water Commission immediately. In the
meantime, the DMK has proposed an agitation in the Southern
districts of Tamil Nadu on April 15 and 16 against the Kerala
stand. This agitation is unfortunate and should be dropped as it
would kindle the passions in both the States. The two States
should resume talks under the auspices of the Central Water
Commission for a negotiated settlement.
S. Kuppuswamy,
