Senior SC advocate gets tax payer award

MUMBAI, APRIL 14. Eminent corporate lawyer and senior advocate, Supreme Court, Mr. Dinesh Vyas, was conferred the ``Rashtriya Samman'' by the Finance Minister, Mr. Yashwant Sinha, recently. This is in recognition for being one of the highest taxpayers during assessment years 1994-95 to 1998-99.

Mr. Vyas was selected for this national honour under the category `Profession', being the highest tax paying senior advocate of the country. He specialises in taxation laws and foreign collaboration laws and is the legal counsel to a large number of Indian and multinational companies and of leading firms of chartered accountants and solicitors. He has served on several high power government committees and on boards of several companies and has been giving lectures on current economic issues including theUnion Budget all over the country for more than two decades.

In his 1998 budget speech, Mr. Sinha had stated that there was a need to evolve a culture of pride by honest taxpayers and had proposed to introduce a scheme called, ``Samman'' to demonstrate the society's recognition of the honest taxpayer's important contribution to the national cause. Mr. Sinha also announced that similar honours would be conferred at State and city levels with a view to changing the mindset towards voluntary compliance with tax laws.
