County player exposes himself in Wisden
LONDON, APRIL 14. A relatively unknown English county player was
thrust into the spotlight on Friday when his appearance in
cricket's Bible, Wisden made the headlines.
But it was not for any sporting feat that Leicestershire left-arm
spinner Matthew Brimson received such media attention - it was
for exposing himself. The offending team photograph, which
features a grinning Brimson, managed to slip past editor Matthew
Engel and he was less than pleased.
Engel described the stunt as `an insult to county members'. ``I
can see the funny side like everybody else, but I think you have
to be a damn sight better at your profession to behave like this.
It is all part of the syndrome that is affecting county
cricket,'' Engel told the The Guardian newspaper.
Leicestershire moved quickly to deflate the situation. ``We have
had a meeting with Matthew Brimson and have accepted his
explanation that it is not in his character to do anything that
would cause offence,'' a statement said. ``He wishes to apologise
to anyone who may have misinterpreted the published photograph.''
