Hindi film week in Israel
TEL AVIV, APRIL 16. After the Bombay blockbuster, `Dil To Pagal
Hai' (DTPH) turned many a heart crazy here, with the film running
to full houses for several weeks recently, five Hindi movies are
set to thrill Israelis during the first-ever `Hindi film week'
next month, signalling a new opening for Indian films in this
Jewish state.
The `Hindi Film Week', being organised between May 3 and 10 to
coincide with the first Indian trade fair here, will see the
screening of box office hits subtitled in Hebrew, such as
`Khamoshi', `Virasat', `Mr. India', `DTPH' and `Massey Sahib'.
This would provide a glimpse of the lesser known side of the
Indian cinema, Indian embassy officials told PTI here.
The Indian embassy, with the cooperation of the Indian Council of
Cultural Relations and the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
is also arranging performances of a Gujarati folk music and dance
group in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa and in towns inhabitated
by Jews of Indian origin, they said.
``We expect a good response from Israeli audience following the
great success of DTPH and general attraction for Indian culture
here,'' an embassy official said.
Besides, ``the event would open up the possibility of Indian film
market also,'' the official said, adding ``apart from Government-
to-Government ties we want to reach out to the public and expose
them to rich Indian culture.''
