Flamboyant tone, innovative theme

THE UNIQUE glazes and shapes of Uttar Pradesh's famed Khurja pottery open up a whole new world of decorative and utility pottery. Hand made, hand painted, drip glazed and etched makes it unique as does the rich texture, sheen and colouring. A range of Khurja pottery items from contemporary 37-piece dinner sets to ingeniously shaped pizza plates, serving bowls and spoons, lovely wall plates, vases, etc. can be seen at a special exhibition currently on at The Central Cottage Industries Emporium, Temple Towers, 672, Anna Salai, Nandanam. Each item has been designed, incorporating innovative themes and colour combinations.

The exhibition's theme this year is rich royal blue, painted over with bold Mughal floral motifs or delicately etched with tribal figures. The vases, wall plates and dishes are attractive. An eye-catching juxtapositioning of enormous yellow sunflowers on blue wall plates and vases introduces a richly flamboyant tone to the pottery. Equally flamboyant and baroque are bunches of sculpted gold grapes and flowers on deep blue flower vases, lamp stands etc.

Among the attractive pieces crafted by Fayaz Ahmed are blue designer serving dishes and bowls with handles shaped like graceful swans, birds, etc. Says Branch Manager Shri Anathraj: ``Every year we introduce a new theme in the Khurja Pottery Exhibition as part of design development by Cottage Industry Emporium and to keep in tune with new trends.''

Also available at the exhibition are decorated designer tea sets in different shapes, dinner sets, a variety of serving dishes, pizza plates, tumblers and some attractive coffee and tea mugs.

The exhibition will be on till April 25.
