S.C. stays bail to Kishan Kumar
By Our Legal Correspondent
NEW DELHI, APRIL 28. The Supreme Court today stayed the Delhi
High Court order granting anticipatory bail to actor, Mr. Kishan
Kumar, an accused in the cricket ``match-fixing case''.
The interim stay was granted by a Bench comprising Mr. Justice K.
T. Thomas and Mr. Justice R.P. Sethi on a special leave petition
filed by the Delhi police challenging the High Court order passed
on April 25.
When the Additional Solicitor-General, Mr. Kirit Rawal, pointed
out that despite a number of judicial pronouncements against
grant of pre-arrest bail, the High Court had granted anticipatory
bail to the actor without giving reasons, the Bench said it was
``shocking''.
Mr. Rawal argued that in cases such as this, interrogation was a
necessity to unravel the whole controversy and the High Court was
not justified in granting anticipatory bail.
The Bench posted the SLP for final disposal on May 5.
