4 children, 3 women among 10 killed in accident

ELURU, APRIL 28. Ten persons, including four children and three
women, died as a truck overturned on the NH-5, near Dendulur
between Eluru and Tadepalligudem in West Godavari district,
around midnight on Thursday. Eleven others were hurt in the
accident. Six of the deceased were farm labourers from
Choudintivalasa village in Dathirajeru mandal of Vizianagaram
district and four were from a fruit vendor's family in Vuyyur of
Krishna district.
The mishap occurred when the driver of the truck, which was going
from Vijayawada to Vizianaragam with a load of packaged salt
bags, applied sudden brake at a narrow bridge. The lorry
overturned burying the passengers under the salt bags. Twentyfour
persons were travelling in the lorry with some of them occupying
the cabin and a majority being perched on salt bags in the
trolley.
Those seated in the cabin escaped with injuries while those
occupying the trolley bore the brunt. The deceased were
identified as Kiladi Martha (20), Kiladi Lakshmiaiah (40),
Suragala Apparao (10), Kiladi Veeraiah (40), Kiladi Lakshimi
(35), Kiladi Jyothi (7), all belonging to Scheduled Castes from
Vizianagaram district; Dabbada Ramadevi (25), Dabbada Sai (4),
Dabbada Bhargavi (5) and Ijjada Ramana (20), all from Vuyyur.
The injured were shifted to the Government Hospital here. One
woman suffered multiple fractures and another received head
injuries. According to reports, the farm labourers who migrated
to Krishna district for work were on their way back home and
boarded the lorry at Hanuman Junction. The fruit vendor's family
from Vuyyur, which was on a pilgrimage to Annavaram in East
Godavari district, boarded the lorry at Vijayawada. The police
took into custody the cleaner of the vehicle. Patsa Venkata

The District Collector, Mrs. Poonam Malakondaiah, the Joint
Collector, Mr. M. Subramanyam, the Superintendent of Police, Mr.
Kripanand Tripathi Ujela, and the ASP, Mr. Mahesh M. Bhagwat,
visited the spot and supervised relief operations. The injured
were granted an ex-gratia of Rs. 1000 in the case of adults and
Rs. 500 for children. Two senior officers were deputed to provide
relief to the injured at the hospital and help the relatives
transport the bodies.
