Rohtang pass opened for traffic
SHIMLA, APRIL 30. The world's highest motorable road, Rohtang
Pass, which serves as the gateway to the tribal Lahaul Valley in
Himachal Pradesh, has been opened for light vehicles after a
massive snow-clearing operation.
The pass, situated at over 4,000 metres above sea level, would be
opened for heavy vehicles from May 1, official sources said here
on Friday.
The pass was closed in the last week of December due to heavy
snowfall. This is the first time that the pass was opened during
April, almost 45 days in advance, the sources said.
