Athre, 5 of family drowned

BANGALORE, APRIL 30. The noted music composer and singer, Mr. G.
V. Athre, and five members of his family were drowned in the
Tunga near Sringeri in Chikmagalur District on Sunday afternoon.
Apart from Mr. Athre (38), his wife, Ms. Vatsala Athre (30), his
son Viranchi (5), his sister, Ms. Suchela (40) and her two
children, Arpita (10) and Pradyumna (9), were drowned in the
Tunga at Sannekonda, three km. from Sringeri, around noon today.
All bodies except that of Pradyumna were fished out at around 4-
30 p.m.
The Director-General and Inspector-General of Police, Mr. C.
Dinakar, told TheHindu here that Mr. Athre and his family, who
were on a pilgrimage to Sringeri, went to the river for bathing.
While bathing, Mr. Athre's son, Viranchi, went into the river and
was drowned. Mr. Athre, who went to save his son, was also
drowned. The other four, who rushed to save Mr. Athre, too were
drowned.
The bodies will be brought to the Arvind Studio, owned by Mr.
Athre, in Hanumanthanagar in Bangalore.
Mr. Athre had produced over 100 cassettes, manly in the field of
``Sugama Sangeetha.''
