Probity in public life
Sir, - The anguish of the distinguished Congressman, Mr. C.
Subramaniam, for restoration of probity in public life (``Bihar -
then and now'', The Hindu, April 26) represents the feelings of
many well-meaning people. Power at any cost, not probity, is
definitely dominating the rudderless Congress psyche today.
Before the ink was dry at Pachmarhi, coalition with the NCP
(party of exiled Congressmen) in Maharashtra, somersaults one
after the other in Bihar, bonhomie with the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu
(including those that broke away, claiming corruption as the
deadliest enemy) and the ongoing talks with the Trinamool
Congress in West Bengal, all point to the disastrous path that
the Congress is taking.
A. V. Ramana Rao,
Chennai
Sir, - I share the anguish expressed by Mr. C. Subramaniam. By
narrating the sequence of events in detail, the author has
brought out the contrast in the spirit of the Congress party then
and now. While the total lack of principles and ethics among the
present Congress members is disgusting enough, the desire on the
part of Congressmen to be hypocritical about the current state of
the party is appalling. The Bihar issue is but one of the many,
for which the Congressmen, in particular the CWC members, ought
to be ashamed of.
T. Gnana Bhaskar,
Melbourne (U.S.)
