By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MAY 6. Four dacoits, who had escaped from the Jeedimetla police station in the early hours of Friday, were shot dead by the police the same night.

They were allegedly trying to loot a farm house at Edulabad village in Ghatkesar police station limits when the police confronted them, according to the Ranga Reddy District Superintendent of Police (SP), Mr. N. V. Surendra Babu.Briefing presspersons here on Saturday, Mr. Surendra Babu said the desperados - Gosu Ramakrishna (32), K. Chinna Venkatesh (22), Akula Srinu (18) and Pala Jayanthu (25) - after escaping from the police station, went towards Ghatkesar.

At about 9 p.m. they waylaid a scooterist, Balraj, near Ankushapur village of Ghatkesar mandal and robbed him of a gold ring and Rs. 400 in each. He lodged a complaint with the Ghatkesar police. The local station Sub-Inspector, Mr. A.V.R. Narasimha Rao, along with his staff immediately left in search of the criminals.

Meanwhile, the dacoits, armed with axes and knives, went to the farm house of Ghouse Mistry at Edulabad village just after the stroke of midnight. As they were thrashing a farm servant, Moula Ali, the police team reached there. The SI asked the dacoits to surrender, but the latter started attacking the police team. In the scuffle, the SI and the farm servant also suffered minor injuries. Thereafter, the police opened fire in self- defence, killing the brigands on the spot.

The SP said 19 rounds were fired by the police. The slain dacoits were said to be involved in over 50 property offences in the State and in the border areas of Karnataka and Maharashtra. Stolen valuables, including gold weighing 309 grams, and a sum of about Rs. 40,000 were recovered from them. They were among the 11 dacoits who were recently arrested by the Ranga Reddy district police.

To a question, Mr. Surendera Babu said a magisterial inquiry would be held and all the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) would be followed. When asked about the escape of the dacoits from the Jeedimetla police station, he said the Balanagar DSP was probing the lapse. ``Suitable action would be taken against those responsible,'' he added.
