Indian women swamp Thailand
KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 6 India scored 16 field goals as it overwhelmed
minnows Thailand 17-0 in their opening match of the junior Asia
Cup for women at the Kl hockey stadium here today.
In the other matches of the day, China beat host Malaysia 1-0
while Japan beat Taiwan 8-0. Top favourite Korea started on a
winning note beating Uzbekistan 9-0.
For India it was Mamta Kharab who led from the front scoring five
goals in the 28th, 52nd, 58th, 69th and 70th minutes. Surinder
Kaur also got in three getting a hat-trick in the bargain.
India completely dominated proceedings but could only open its
account in the 12th minute off a field goal by captain Suraja
Lata Devi. At the break, India led 8-0.
The only goal that came off a penalty corner was scored by Pushpa
Pradhan in the 30th minute. The other scorers for India were Neha
Singh (65th), Sumrai Tete (64th), Adline Kerketta (25th), Pakpi
Devi (24th and 27th), Meenakshi (38th and 54th). India plays its
next match against Taiwan tomorrow.
