India, Nepal pledge to fight terrorism
NEW DELHI, MAY 10. India and Nepal expressed their determination
to fight the scourge of terrorism and decided not to allow their
respective territories to be used for activities prejudicial to
each others' security, a foreign office spokesman said today.
These were agreed to during talks the External Affairs Minister,
Mr. Jaswant Singh had with his Nepalese counterpart Mr. Chakra
Prasad Bastola.
The two sides decided to expedite the issue of demarcation of the
Indo-Nepal border in accordance with the schedule worked out by
the joint working group. The alignment of the border in the
western sector including the Kalapani area would also be looked
into.
Mr. Bastola met the Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the
Defence Minister, Mr. George Fernandes, the HRD Minister, Dr.
M.M. Joshi, and the Water Resources Minister, Mr. C.P. Thakur and
the Congress(I) president, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, during his stay.
Mr. Jaswant Singh and Mr. Bastola agreed that the existing
mechanism for dialogue and interaction should be utilised to a
greater degree for quicker implementation of projects in Nepal.
The Prime Minister's Principal Secretary, Mr. Brajesh Mishra,
would be meeting the Nepalese Cabinet Secretary in the next few
weeks as part of the high-level task force.
