Junior6 for Dortmund meet
CHENNAI, MAY 10. In following the trend of recent events, the
28th Chess Meeting at Dortmund includes the computer software
programme Junior6 in addition to big names like World No. 2
Viswanathan Anand and No. 3 Vladimir Kramnik.
According to an official press release on Tuesday, the Sparkassen
Dortmund Chess Days 2000 tournament will be a category 18 or 19
event depending on the rating movements of the invited players in
the July 2000 FIDE rating list. It will take place at the
Dortmund Theatre in Germany from July 7-16.
Besides the decision to invite World PC category champion Junior,
the field includes the 1994 winner Jeroen Piket of Holland, FIDE
finalists at Las Vegas, champion Alexander Khalifman and Vladimir
Akopian. It will be their first clash since their six-match duel
last August.
Junior6, programmed by two Israeli men, will be the first
commercial chess programme to compete in a regular classical
super category tournament which effects Elo rating to the nine
humans. Junior, which is distributed by a German company uses a
single processor and is also commercially available in dual
processors under the name `Deep Junior'.
World No. 3 Kramnik, the king of Dortmund who won the events from
1995-1998, will be seen in action for the last time before his
scheduled World championship match with Kasparov in October.
Young rising star Peter Leko of Hungary will defend his title.
German veteran Robert Huebner is the only local player while
Britain's best, Michael Adams, and Evgenny Bareev of Russia are
the other players.
For the first time, broadcasting rights have been granted to
Kasparovchess.com, a leading chess website from Israel.
Besides the super category contest, one category 10/11 tournament
and the traditional open tournament will also be staged.
The organisation will continue with the novelty which made them
stand apart from most other events. The entire pairings along
with the colours they will get will be announced a month in
advance to help players come better prepared for the 10-player
contest.
