Ex-PM's farm invaded

HARARE, MAY 14. The former Prime Minister, Mr. Ian Smith's 200- hectare maize and cattle farm in central Zimbabwe had been invaded by about 50 people who had started pegging out plots, his son said today.

Mr. Alec Smith, son of the 81-year-old Smith, said the group moved on to the farm, near the town of Shurugwi, yesterday.

He could not immediately identify the group as veterans of the liberation war fought against his father's regime, but said they appeared to be peaceful.

The family believed, Mr. Smith said, that the invaders were unemployed locals from Shurugwi who were ``making use of the current lawlessness to peg out plots''.
