'Govt. thinking of abolishing PU Education Board'

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, MAY 14. The State Government is thinking of abolishing the Pre-University Education Board and considering a change in the pattern of school education with five years of study in the high school from Standard Eight. This is being contemplated to bring the pre-university teachers under higher education, the Minister for Higher Education, Dr. Parameshwar, has said.

He told presspersons here on Sunday that the PU teachers now were placed between high school and degree teachers and proper pay- scale had not been fixed for them. ``The agitating PU teachers met me this morning and conveyed their desire that the Government should intervene to resolve the crisis amicably. This is a welcome change, since the Government can now have talks with them and take an appropriate decision.''

The Minister said the Government would not revoke the KESMA since the interests of students had to be protected. It had not taken a confrontationist stand on this issue and did not intend to cause hardship to teachers. ``Since they have now come forward to scale down their demand, we will have to work out a scheme to solve the crisis,'' he said. Although some pre-university colleges had been delinked from degree colleges, a lot more had to be done.

When his attention was drawn to his statement of enabling students to enter professional courses based on CET rankings, he said that under the changed circumstances, this loud thinking of the Government had no significance.
