Water supply given priority in State: Stalin

ERODE, MAY 14. The Chennai Mayor, Mr. M. K. Stalin, has said
water supply was given priority in the State.
Inaugurating an overhead tank at Sathyamangalam on Saturday
night, Mr. Stalin said though the Government was providing water
to all areas, the demand for the water was high. He assured that
all people would be provided with sufficient drinking water.
The Mayor said Sathyamangalam was a medium town, where the water
supply scheme was implemented in 1966. Now the demand for water
was high and so at a total cost of Rs 420 lakhs, a water supply
scheme had been implemented. Already an overhead tank at a cost
of Rs 64 lakhs had been built. Now to store 15 lakh litres of
water an overhead tank had been constructed. He said daily 110
litres of water would be supplied.
He said five municipalities and 52 town panchayats were
functioning in Erode district, of this three municipalities and
24 town panchayats were having pucca water supply schemes.
He said after the elections to the local bodies, several rural
developmental works were carried out in the district.
Mr. Stalin said various welfare schemes were being executed
through the social welfare department. He lauded the Erode
district for proper implementation of Government sponsored
schemes.
Mr N. K. K. Periyasamy, Handloom Minister, said Bhavani river was
meeting the drinking water and irrigational needs of the
district. He said over sixty lakh people in Erode and Karur
districts were using the Bhavani river water. Over three lakh
acres of lands were getting water supply for irrigation. He
sought the cooperation of officials and public in keeping the
Bhavani river clean.
He said desilting of canals were being done in the district. The
LBP, Kalingarayan, Thadapalli and Arakkankottai channels were
cleaned and now the water was flowing freely. He lauded the
district administration for implementing the Government schemes
properly.
Mr Anthiyur P. Selvarasu, Khadi Minister, said Erode district was
doing well by implementing various schemes.
Mr S. Karuthiah Pandian, District Collector, said in Erode
district over Rs 50 crore worth works were executed. He claimed
that the district was standing first in the implementation of
Government schemes.
Regarding the implementation of the 20-point programme, for the
second year in succession the district was standing first in the
State. For the empowerment of women, self help groups were
started and so far 410 such groups had been formed, of this 138
were having more than Rs 2 crore fund. Further Rs three crores
had been granted to 368 youths as Khadi and village industries
marginal money for starting industries.
The Collector said the Government had sanctioned Rs 50 crores for
the desilting of various canals in the district. Of this Rs. 20
crores had been sanctioned and the would be given in the coming
years. He said for modernising the LBP canal, a scheme had been
prepared at a cost of Rs 800 crores and was sent to Government
for approval.
The Collector announced that an Industrial Growth centre would be
set up at a cost of Rs 110 crores and a turmeric complex at a
cost of Rs 20 crores at Perundurai SIPCOT complex soon. The
Collector also said the Integrated Tribal Development Programme
would be implemented at Hasanure in Thalawadi hill area where
30,000 tribes would be given all basic amenities.
The Collector said total sanitation programme would be
implemented at a cost of Rs 36 lakhs in Erode district. He said
the district administration was conducting mini mass contact days
and also sending officials to villages to redress the grievances
of people.
Mr A. M. Kasi Viswanathan, Managing Director, Tamilnadu Water
Supply and Drainage Board, said the Government had planned to
spend Rs 842 crores this year for water supply, of this Erode
district would have new schemes.
