'Records to go if found guilty'
JOHANNESBURG, MAY 14. The South African Cricket Board will delete
match results and individual averages from the record books if
its Commission of Inquiry into cricket match-fixing finds
concrete evidence of wrongdoing against players, a top Board
official has said.
``If it is proved conclusively that an individual has been
involved in wrongdoing in our local national matches, then that
match would be scratched from the record books,'' Brian Basson,
UCB's head of playing affairs has said.
Basson hoped the International Cricket Council (ICC) would also
follow suit by deleting performances in international games if
players are found guilty of corrupt practices.
The match-fixing scandal has been raging ever since the Delhi
police named sacked South African skipper Hansie Cronje in their
sensational match-fixing case registered last month. The South
African judicial inquiry commission into match-fixing meanwhile
has started conducting initial investigations and was collecting
relevant information ahead of starting its paper work.
John Bacon of the justice department, secretary to the commission
headed by retired judge Edwin King, said: ``We will start our
public hearings as soon as the logistics are put into place.''
The panel will conduct its hearings at its offices in Cape Town,
he added.
