Australia takes title

NEW DELHI, MAY 14. The Indian women's team disappointed on the third and final day of the Queen Sirikit Cup golf tournament, finishing eighth in a field of 10 teams at the Lin Kou Golf Club, outside Taipei, on Sunday.

Australia won its seventh Sirikit title with a tally of 426 while Malaysia and Indonesia brought in fine scores on the concluding day to overtake India, according to information received here.

Irina Brar finished seventh in the individual placings, in a field of 33 players, with a final day card of 74. The 15-year-old Chandigarh girl totalled 222, the best score ever by an Indian in the 22 year history of the Sirikit Cup. She had carded 73 and 75 on the first two days.

Anjali Chopra had too many three-putts, as the ball lipped the hole time and again, and she ended up with 78. For the third day running, Shalini Malik's score, this time an 84, was of academic interest only. India aggregated 452.

For Australia, Helen Beatty, fired a brilliant six- under par 66 on the final day, the best round in the tournament, to ensure the title at 426. Korea was runner-up at 428 while Japan was 14 strokes behind for the third place.Beatty won the individual title with 211.

The placings: Australia 426, Korea 428, Japan 442, Thailand 443, Chinese Taipei 445, Indonesia 446, Malaysia 448, India 452, New Zealand 454, Philippines 456, Hong Kong 486.
