Rituals through the lens
THE RELIGIOUS beliefs of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains - each different
in focus, and yet drawn together by many similar attitudes and
approaches will be the focus of an exhibition of photographs by
Stephen P. Huyler.
"Meeting God: Elements of Devotion in India", which will be on
display from May 18 to June 3 at the Lalit Kala Akademi, will
feature 84 cibachrome photographs accompanied by detailed
captions and explanatory notes. The photographs capture the
breadth and vitality of worship at home, on the roadside, in
temples and during festivals.
Having spent four months a year for the past 28 years, travelling
the subcontinent, the American art historian, cultural
anthropologist and author of several scholarly books on the
subject, has simply and eloquently captured the sacred rituals of
the Hindus, Sikhs and Jains.
Huyler's latest book, "Meeting God: Elements of Hindu Devotion",
published by the Yale University in September 1999, was intended
to complement this exhibition. The exhibition which is currently
on a tour of the country will later move to the Smithsonian
Institution in Washington.
