Govt. hardens stand against PU teachers
By Our Staff Reporter
BANGALORE, MAY 15. The State Government on Monday hardened its
stand against the striking pre-university teachers and decided to
initiate stringent measures under the Karnataka Essential
Services Maintenance Act (KESMA) against the lecturers, who had
boycotted valuation of PU answer scripts.
This decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the
Chief Minister, Mr. S. M. Krishna.
The meeting decided not to concede the demands of the striking PU
teachers.
The action to be taken under KESMA to expedite valuation work was
the main agenda of the meeting. The Act provides for imprisonment
and a fine of Rs. 2,000 or both. It also makes provision for
curtailment of wages of striking teachers and to withhold their
promotion and pensionary benefits.
The Chief Minister is understood to have instructed the officers
concerned to issue orders to the lecturers to attend valuation
work immediately.
He has also instructed the superintendents of police and deputy
commissioners to provide the names and addresses of errant
lecturers so that action could be initiated against them.
The Home Secretary, Mr. M. B. Prakash, the Director-General and
Inspector-General of Police, Mr. C. Dinakar, the Secretary to the
Chief Minister, Mr. S. V. Ranganath, and the Director of the Pre-
University Board, Mr. Harish Gowda, participated in the meeting.
