Khairnar to continue demolition drive
MUMBAI, MAY 15. The Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Brihan
Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mr. G. R. Khairnar, today
said he would continue his job of removing illegal structures in
the city notwithstanding physical attacks on him or resistance
from the hawkers and hutment dwellers.
Mr. Khairnar, who sustained an injury in the leg after being
roughed up by some angry hawkers on Saturday, told PTI today
``while doing such risky jobs, there is bound to be a threat from
anti-social elements who may not even be directly connected with
the hawking''.
``I am continuing with my drive against unauthorised structures
and it is job of the city police to give me protection if they
feel so. I am hesitant to ask any such facilities, it is they
(police) who have to decide about the security of the people who
take up such risks in cleaning the city'', he said.
The corporation has deployed commandos and police force near
Chhatrapati Shivaji terminus and BMC building with additional
help from Central Railway Police Force to make a success of Mr.
Khairnar's demolition drive against encroachments. The untiring
Mr. Khairnar, who is being given extension by the city fathers,
today served an ultimatum to pavement dwellers residing in
suburbs of the city.
