Ayodhya mahant shot

LUCKNOW, MAY 16. Mahant Jagdish Das of the Thakurain Mandir at the Ram Janmabhoomi complex in Ayodhya was shot dead today allegedly by another mahant Jitendra Das, a Home Department spokesman said.

A dispute over property and mahantship of the temple was believed to be the cause behind the murder, the spokesman said. Jagdish Das succumbed to his injuries while he was being brought to Lucknow for treatment.

Jitendra Das fled after committing the crime, the spokesman said.
