Manmohan contradicts Cong.(I) stand
NEW DELHI, MAY 16. Differences have cropped up in the Congress(I)
over its stand on subsidies after the party's working committee
member, Dr. Manmohan Singh, questioned in the Rajya Sabha today
the continuance of ``non-merit'' subsidies.
The top brass led by the Congress President, Ms. Sonia Gandhi,
marched to the Prime Minister's residence demanding a rollback of
the price hike in essential commodities.
If only the subsidies, which amounted to Rs. 1,30,000 crore, were
saved, each of the three hundred million people below the poverty
line could be straightaway provided with a money order of Rs.
4,000 per month, Dr. Manmohan Singh said while participating in
the discussion in the Rajya Sabha on the Constitution amendment
to devolve more funds to the States.
