PU teachers call off boycott

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, MAY 16. Pre-University teachers on Tuesday called off their boycott of valuation work after the Government reportedly agreed to hold talks with them on May 30 to discuss their demands.

``We will commence valuation work immediately,'' Mr. Parashuramana Gowda, General Secretary of the Karnataka State Education Officers, Principals, Lecturers and Non-teaching Staff Federation, said here.

He urged all the striking teachers to return to valuation work immediately. The Deputy Chief Examiners are likely to resume work tomorrow and assistant examiners on Friday, at their respective centres.

The federation is hopeful that the Government will consider demands of the teachers favourably.

Pre-University teachers went on strike on April 18 protesting the disparity in pay scales of the PU teachers and undergraduate college teachers.

The Government invoked the Karnataka Essential Services Maintenance Act against the striking teachers on Friday. While 19 members of the federation were arrested under ESMA on Saturday, 295 teachers were arrested on Monday.

The Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Mr. H.Vishwanath, told The Hindu that the Government had assured the teachers that ESMA would be withdrawn after the Cabinet meeting on Thursday.
