Fresh hope for asthma patients
By Our Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI, MAY 20.
There is fresh hope for those wanting to rid themselves of
chronic asthma. Bathini Fish Medicine -- administered once every
year by the Goud family in Hyderabad and a boon for suffering
asthma patients in India and abroad -- once again offers a
possibility of total cure on the auspicious day of `Mrigasira
Karti' which falls on June 7 morning.
Continuing a family practice of 156 years, the five Goud brothers
offer this medicine free of cost, its secret formula known only
to them. The medicine is prepared at Doodhbowli, 2 km from the
historic Charminar in Hyderabad, and distributed at the
Exhibition Grounds there.
Modern asthma treatment requires emergency room visits or
mechanical ventilation (nebulization), very expensive for the
common person. Drugs like Aminophyline have played a
controversial role in the treatment of bronchial asthma. In this
context, the Bathini Fish cure has gained immense popularity over
the years.
Legend has it that the formula of some miraculous herbs was
passed on to Veeranna Goud by a holy man way back in 1845. The
practice has flowed down in the family since then.
Bathini Fish Medicine is given on Mrigasira Karti nakshetra. At
first the medicine is kept in the mouth of a live sardine fish, 2
to 3 inches in size, and the same is slipped into the mouth of
the patient. The fish is slippery, so it causes no problem in
swallowing. The live fish travels wagging its tail and fins
through the throat and negotiates the phlegmatic congestion,
curing hundred per cent.
Three doses of the extra medicine are provided to the patients,
to be taken on three successive Karthis -- Arudra Karthi,
Punnarvasu Karti and Pushymi Karti -- which fall every fifteen
days. After taking Bathini Fish Medicine, the patient is put
under strict diet control for 45 days.
The medicine has been found quite effective in providing complete
cure, if taken by a patient for three consecutive years.
Since the death of two elder brothers in the family, there have
been rumours that the yearly medicine may not be administered.
But the three younger brothers along with the trained eldest sons
of the two who passed away recently will continue to treat the
patients this year on June 7.
The Goud brothers have warned the people against accepting cures
from quacks claiming to be their assistants or relatives, as that
might be fatal.
