Identity cards for auto drivers from today

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 28. The city police will introduce from Monday the issuance of identity cards to autorickshaw drivers plying at night hours.

According to a press note from Mr. Abdul Rahim, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), the scheme follows growing evidence of the involvement of drivers plying the vehicles at night and various crimes in the city. A sizeable section of the offenders hailed from the suburbs of the city and their involvement in anti-social activities also reflected poorly on the collective image of autorickshaw drivers operating in the city.

The city police held extensive discussions with trade union representatives before finalising the scheme.

During the first phase, the identity cards would be issued to drivers attached to the auto stands at Aristo Junction, Thampanoor KSRTC and Tamil Nadu bus stations, the Pre-paid facility at the railway station and the RMS.

Drivers operating at night hours (after 6 p.m.) from the stands at Aristo Jn, KSRTC and Tamil Nadu bus terminals should inform the Thampanoor police station about commencement of operations, register their name, licence number and signature. Auto drivers operating at the pre-paid facility and the RMS are directed to do the same at the police aid post near the pre-paid counter.

As an incentive, free personal insurance cover is being provided for drivers operating at night. The scheme is being assisted by the Trivandrum Lion's Club and the PRS Hospital.

Both the identity card scheme and insurance package will be formally inaugurated at a function scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Chandrashekharan Nair stadium.
