A.P. students' distinction in IIT exam
By R. Ravikanth Reddy
HYDERABAD, MAY. 30. More than 500 students from Andhra Pradesh
are in the top 3,000 ranks of the Joint Entrance Examination
(JEE) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology this year.
The number is unusual because students from the State normally
preferred engineering colleges within Andhra Pradesh or in
Karnataka and Maharashtra.
There are nearly 20,000 seats in the 104 engineering colleges in
Andhra Pradesh.
While two students have figured in the top 10, more than 20
students have bagged ranks below 100.
This includes the 3rd rank bagged by Ms. Mythili Ranganath and
Mr. K.K.S. Bhasker, who has bagged the 9th rank.
He is the State topper in the engineering stream of Engineering,
Medical and Agricultural Common Entrance Test (EAMCET). Mythili
stood second in the engineering stream of the EAMCET.
According to some academics, this is the first time the State
could bag so many ranks.
The State has a number of ``residential colleges'' and ``coaching
centres'' offering special coaching for IIT entrance examination.
The elated professors in many such institutions have urged the
State Government to bear the college fee of successful students
or at least provide financial assistance to the toppers.
