52 nominations for Council polls

BANGALORE, MAY 30. Fiftytwo candidates, including 32 independents, have filed nomination papers for election to three seats each from the teachers' and graduates' constituencies in the Legislative Council, scheduled for June 17. Yesterday was the last date for filing nomination papers from these constituencies.Mr. Vatal Nagaraj, who unsuccessfully contested in last year's Assembly election, is among the 13 candidates who have filed nomination papers for the South teachers' constituency. Apart from the Congress(I), JD(U), JD(S) and BSP candidates, eight filed nomination papers as independents. There are 11,846 voters in the constituency.

A prominent candidate in the North-East graduates' constituency, which has 38,756 voters, is Dr. M. R. Tanga of the BJP, who is seeking re- election. Mr. Vaijnath Patil, senior JD(S) leader, is another prominent candidate. Five independents and JD-U and Congress(I) candidates have also filed nominations.

Another BJP candidate seeking re-election from the South-West graduates' constituency is Mr. D. H. Shankara Murthy. The number of voters here is 28,564. There are four candidates in all, including an independent.

The Bangalore graduates' constituency, which has the highest number of 51,845 voters, also has a BJP candidate in Mr. Ramachandra Gowda, who is seeking re-election. In all, there are nine candidates, including six independents.

Mr. K. C. Puttasidda Shetty, who was elected to the Council as an independent last time, has filed his nomination papers as a Congress(I) candidate this time from the South-East teachers' constituency. Other prominent candidates here are Mr. H. Ekantiah (Ind.) a former minister, and Mr. S. Channabasavaiah (JD-U), former MLC. Eight independents have also filed their nomination papers. Mr. K. Balakrishna Bhat of the BJP is seeking re-election from the South-West teachers' constituency. Seven candidates have filed their nomination papers for the election, apart from four independents.
