Mahanta happy over by-election victories
By Our Special Correspondent
GUWAHATI, MAY 30. The two Assembly bye-election victories have
buoyed up the sagging morale of the ruling AGP. The party
president and Chief Minister, Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, today
profusely thanked the people of the State for the ``deep love and
confidence'' they have reposed in his party.
He told mediapersons here that the defeat of the AGP candidate at
North Karimganj was because of the presence of two party rebels
in the fray, who took away a sizeable chunk of AGP votes.
But even in victory, he was unsparing in his criticism of the
Congress.
He accused the Congress of doing ``much damage to the social
fabric of the State by sowing seeds of division and dissension''
for its political gains.
Claiming that the bye-poll results had proved that regionalism
had taken strong roots in Assam, Mr. Mahanta said the Congress
and the BJP had lost their credibility as the people had realized
that these parties were ``deceiving'' them.
