'Assam may face serious power crisis
By Our Special Correspondent
GUWAHATI, MAY 30. Assam and six other N.E. States will face
serious power crisis from June 1 as the North- Eastern Electric
Power Corporation (NEEPCO) will drastically reduce power supply
to them for their failure to pay Rs. 933.61 crore dues.
Mr. P. K. Kotoky, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of NEEPCO, a
Central undertaking, told mediapersons here on Tuesday that he
had requested the seven States to pay at least Rs. 24 crores per
month which is the monthly operation and maintenance expenditure
of the company. But the response from the States has not been
encouraging.
Assam will, perhaps, be the worst hit. Mr. Kotoky said that of
the total peak power load demand of about 900 MW for the entire
region, NEEPCO supplied about 500 MW, of which Assam alone
accounted for 230 to 240 MW. More than 75 per cent of this demand
or about 180 MW will be cut by the NEEPCO from June 1.
