Action against police official in bribery case

MUMBAI, MAY 30.The Maharashtra Government has directed an Additional Commissioner

of Police to proceed on indefinite leave, following allegations of his involvement in a Rs. 2.10 lakh bribery case.

The directive to Mr. A.K. Jain was issued last night after a meeting, attended by the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Chhagan Bhujbal, the City Police Commissioner, Mr. M. N. Singh and other top officials.

Sleuths of Anti-corruption Bureau last week nabbed Mr. Jain's chartered accountant, P.C. Lodha, while he was accepting bribe from a police officer on behalf of the ACP. Lodha was remanded to custody till June one.

According to ACB sources, an inspector, Sanjeev Kokil, received a call from Lodha, informing him that the ACP planned to suspend him for his failure to take action against a local bar which was running beyond the stipulated hours.

However, Lodha told Kokil that the matter could be settled, if he agreed to pay the ACP a specified sum of money.
