No comparison
Sir, - Mr. Karunanidhi, while suggesting a Czechoslovakia type
separation of Tamils in Sri Lanka, has compared it to a divorce
in a failed marriage which should be accorded if a husband and a
wife cannot live together.
In this connection I am reminded of the reported remarks of
Gandhiji to a woman who at a public meeting asked him why he
opposed partition of India which she said was like two brothers
wanting to separate and live their own lives. Gandhiji replied
that he would not object to that, but if two babes in the womb
want to separate after tearing their mother apart, he could not
stand it.
The Czechoslovakia separation was probably like a partition among
brothers, but Eelam will be certainly tearing the mother apart.

Sir, - In the forthright Editorial ``An irresponsible stance''
(June 6) you have rightly described Mr. M. Karunanithi's advocacy
for the separation of Sri Lanka as unwarranted and unwelcome.
That Mr. Karunanidhi started saying (after his recent visit to
Delhi) that he would be personally happy for a Tamil Eelam and
has now raised the pitch in consonance with the MDMK and the PMK
(both known to be overt supporters of LTTE) can only be ascribed
to the DMK chief's anxiety to keep the partnership with them
intact with an eye on the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections just a
year away.
The Dravidian partners of the NDA have dealt a serious blow to
the credibility of the Vajpayee Government by their double-speak
which is nothing short of ``hunting with the hound while running
with the hare.'' Indeed, the Centre's stout defence of Kashmir
against its division on ethnic lines will henceforward sound
hollow in the context of the partners of the NDA openly espousing
the cause of a separate Tamil Eelam.
