Chandrika asks coalition to prepare for polls
By Nirupama Subramanaian
COLOMBO, JUNE 14. The Sri Lankan President, Mrs Chandrika
Kumaratunga, has asked members of her party and of the other
parties in the People's Alliance coalition to begin preparing for
general elections.
At a meeting of the PA executive committee yesterday, Mrs
Kumaratunga said elections would be held within five months and
asked the general secretaries of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party
(SLFP) and other constituent parties of the coalition to meet and
decide on matters such as nominations and propaganda material.
The President recently scotched rumours of a postponement of the
elections by declaring that they would be held "on time".
Meanwhile, the United National Party (UNP) has sent its
recommendations for holding free and fair elections to the
Election Commissioners.
