Majid refuses to furnish evidence

KARACHI, JUNE 14. Former Test captain and ex-chief executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Majid Khan has said he was under no obligation to provide any evidence to substantiate his claims that two World Cup matches last year were fixed.

In comments published in daily The News, Majid Khan said he had never made the statement that Pakistan played two fixed World Cup matches against Bangladesh and India before any court, inquiry commission or in the press.

``It was an opinion which I formed on the basis of everything that had taken place in Pakistan cricket since the Sharjah tournament in April 1999 and also because of the odds which changed rapidly during these two games. It is my personal judgement, which I never mentioned anywhere officially.''

Majid Khan said he had shared this feeling with Dr. Ali Bacher when they were discussing the match-fixing issue and if the latter had now made it public before an inquiry commissi- on, the onus was on him to provide the proof or whatever. ``But yes I did tell bacher that in my opinion, two World Cup matches were fixed,'' he said.

Majid Khan said even justice Qayyum had in his report mentioned the fact that Javed Miandad admitted he stepped down after the Sharjah tournament because of differences over the match-fixing issue with some players, while in other places also the World Cup matches came under discussion.
