Musharraf flays call for Kargil probe

By Amit Baruah

ISLAMABAD, JUNE 16. The Pakistani Chief Executive, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, today wanted to know why Mr. Nawaz Sharif as Prime Minister did not set up a commission (as he is demanding now) to probe the truth about the Kargil operation.

Answering a question at a joint press conference with the Indonesian President, Mr. Abdurrahman Wahid, the Chief Executive wondered why Mr. Sharif was putting it on the military Government to probe Kargil.

Alleging that Mr. Sharif was trying to belittle the performance of the armed forces, which is certainly damaging the national interest, the General said "we are absolutely clear on what happened".

Undermining the role of the Pakistani armed forces was a reflection of the low level of Mr. Sharif's patriotic concerns, he said.
