Monsoon: death toll 22

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 16. Two more casualties were reported from Kasaragod district today taking the death toll in the monsoon to 22. Two girls Asifa, 12, and Asmina, 10, were killed in Adhyar village of Kasaragod.

According to the Revenue department, 452 villages were affected by the rain. As many as 32 persons were injured and seven reported missing from various parts of the State. About 884 families were evacuated to safer places and 152 families have been shifted to three relief camps.

Officials figures estimate that 426 houses were destroyed and 3,786 damaged, resulting in a loss of Rs. 244.13 lakhs. The crop loss has been put at Rs. 10.5 crores.

Meanwhile, the monsoon activity showed signs of weakening in the southern parts of the State today. One house was destroyed and six damaged in Kottayam while one house was damaged in Kollam, four in Pathanamthitta and two in Alappuzha.

In Idukki district, 10 houses were destroyed and 26 damaged, in Ernakulam, two were destroyed and 10 damaged and in Thrissur three were destroyed and 26 damaged. About 26 houses were damaged in Palakkad, three in Kozhikode and four in Wayanad. In Kannur district, three houses were destroyed and 10 damaged while in Kasaragod one house was damaged.

A total of 20 houses were destroyed and 121 damaged in the rains today. As many as 124 families were shifted.

Kerala witnessed widespread rain today. Thodupuzha registered 5 cm of rain, Kannur, Aluva, Inamakkal, Piravom and Chengannur 3 cm each and Kodungalloor, Mankombu, Munnar and Vaikom 2 cm each.

The MET Centre here has forecast widespread rain in Kerala up to the morning of June 18.
