Members of inter-State gang arrested

BANGALORE, JUNE 16. A special police team arrested the members of
an inter-State gang and recovered stolen goods valued at Rs. 30
lakhs from them. The gang is said to have looted property worth
Rs. 1.50 crores.
The six-member gang headed by Mohamed Haris (30) of Ramanagaram
had been operating in Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Rangareddy
District of Andhra Pradesh, Hosur in Tamil Nadu and various
places in Karnataka. Haris is said to be an associate of the
anti-social, Tanveer Ahmed.
The recovered goods included 65 quintals of sugar, 74 bags of
jaggery, 11,000 metres of poplin cloth, 54 colour television
sets, tubelights, a lorry, a tempo, two Maruti vans and Rs. 1.50
lakhs in cash.
The members of the gang include Sheik Mohamed Rafiq (45) of HBR
Layout, Shameer Pasha (55) of Chamarajpet, Naseer (24) of
Bannerghatta, Aslam Pasha (30) of Magadi and Babu (28).
Police said that the accused used to forge documents for the
lorries stolen by them and book consignments on the pretext that
they were running a transport company. The consignments were
being unloaded in their godowns in Bangalore, Hubli and Mysore.
The accused had kidnapped the driver and the cleaner of a lorry
carrying coconut oil tins and made away with the vehicle. They
were using the lorry for transporting goods after changing its
registration. They had also stolen two Maruti vans from Hyderabad
and sold them in Bangalore after forging documents, police said.
Many criminals cases had been registered against Haris, Shameer
and Rafiq in various police stations in the City and Hoskote in
Bangalore Rural District. Haris even contested in the Kanakapura
constituency in the 1996 Lok Sabha election. According to police,
he polled over 3,483 votes in the election, and has connections
with many senior politicians. He was also an accused in the
sensational Bombay Hamid murder that took place in Cubbon Park
police station sometime ago.
He was also allegedly involved in kidnapping, dacoity, extortion
and murder reported from J.P.Nagar, City Market, Vijayapura and
Bidadi police station limits. He had been absconding for many
years and police were unable to nab him.
The Police Commissioner, Mr. T.Madiyal, who visited the
Shivajainagar Police Station, where the recovered goods were
displayed, commended the work done by the police team.
The team was headed by the Shivajinagar Police Inspector, Mr.
N.Nagaraj.
The stolen vehicles and other goods recovered from an inter-State
gang on Friday on display at the Shivajinagar police station.
