Milad procession in Srinagar

SRINAGAR, JUNE 16. For the first time in 11 years, authorities today allowed the Islamic Students League-sponsored `Milad' (birthday of Prophet Muhammad) procession in downtown Srinagar. The last time the procession was allowed was in 1989.

The ISL, a constituent of the Hurriyat Conference (HC), used to take out a procession every year despite a ban by the authorities since 1990. Activists of ISL took out a procession from Khankhai Moulla to the martyr's graveyard at Naqashband Sahib, official sources said.

The processionists, led by the HC chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, dispersed peacefully.
