WTO issues to dominate G-15 meet

CAIRO, JUNE 18. Full implementation of the special and differential provisions of the WTO, restoration of its credibility and stamping out terrorism are issues likely to dominate the 10th G-15 summit beginning here tomorrow.

The Vice-President, Mr. Krishan Kant, will represent India at the two-day summit and also participate in a retreat with the heads of 17 countries attending the summit. The summit will dwell at length on North-South and South-South dialogue, poverty and those pertaining to development, democracy and security, officials here said. A trade fair, showcasing several Indian companies, opens today on the sidelines of the summit.

India believes the most important item on the agenda is the restoration of the organisation's credibility. ``This can happen only if the imbalances, inequities and anomalies of the past are addressed frontally,'' the Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr. Murasoli Maran, said. He arrived here earlier this week to attend the G-15 Trade Ministers meet and G-15 Foreign Minister's meeting.

India and several other countries have underlined the need to coordinate action among the G-15. India feels that a frank and intensive dialogue between the G-15 and the G-8 can help in removing any disequilibrium in the world economy.
