Train derails after hitting lorry

By Our Staff Reporter

GUNTUR, JUNE 18. The Secunderabad-Tenali Nagarjuna Express derailed near Vishnupuram in Nalgonda district at 9.45 a.m. today after hitting the rear portion of a sand-laden lorry. While the lorry driver was injured, none in the train suffered any injury.

According to the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the South Central Railway (SCR) Vijayawada division, Mr. Satish Kumar, the train driver, noticed the lorry which was trying to cross the unmanned level- crossing at km.no. 127/14 and took all necessary precautions, including blowing the whistle. The lorry driver ``misjudged'' the speed of the approaching train and proceeded to cross the level-crossing. While the front portion of the lorry could cross the track, the rear portion was hit by the train. In the impact of the hit, the lorry was thrown onto one side, while the wheel of the lorry got stuck in the wheels of the second coach from the engine. As a result, a pair of wheels of the second and third coaches from the engine jumped the rails.

Mr. Satish Kumar said the SCR organised two trains - one from Nadikude and one from Miryalaguda - for transporting the stranded passengers. The SCR offered a train towards Secunderabad for the benefit of those who wished to call off their journey and return. The train taken from Nadikude transported all the passengers towards Tenali. The trains started around 1-30 p.m. The SCR also provided an opportunity to passengers to travel to their respective destinations by APSRTC buses. The railway authorities requisitioned 12 buses for this purpose. But, almost all passengers preferred to travel by the trains arranged by the railway.

The Tenali- Secunderabad Nagarjuna Express (return train) was cancelled and one more passenger train, bound for Secunderabad, passing in that direction was delayed by an hour.
