West Indies humiliates England
By Ted Corbett
BIRMINGHAM, JUNE 18. West Indies wrapped up the first Test in
four overs under three days at Edgbaston after yet another
inspiring performance by Courtney Walsh and another appalling
display of batsmanship by England. It managed just 125 in 58
overs and lost by an innings and 93 runs.
A true measure of this defeat is that Jimmy Adams managed to bat
for six and a half hours but England could not contrive more than
four. The pitch was probably at its best, but after Walsh had
taken the first three wickets for four runs in 32 balls the
innings was in a shambles.
Apart from a dignified show by Nick Knight the rest of the side
simply made their way back to the pavilion at regular intervals.
They were in plenty of time to see England play Germany - a
popular replay of two World Wars in the eyes of many fans - and
plan their time off. For some it will be a long rest from
international cricket for all their contracts.
