Muthiah, Kumbhat re-elected
CHENNAI, JUNE 18. Mr. A.C. Muthiah and Mr. Ashok Kumbhat were re-
elected President and Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Cricket
Association respectively for the year 2000-2001 during the Annual
General body Meeting at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here on
Sunday.
While Mr. Muthiah faced no opposition, Mr. Kumbhat defeated Mr.
G. Nandakumar by 110 votes to 73 after Mr. A.S. Venkateswaran
withdrew.
Mr. S.E. Sankar Rao was elected Joint Secretary with Mr. S.
Kesavan retiring from the fray. Mr. K.C. Sampath Kumar was
nominated as the Assistant Secretary. For the post of the
Treasurer, Mr. C.R. Vijayaraghavan beat Mr. R. Chandrasekaran
114-72.
Messrs S. Ganesan, K.M. Mammen, K. Subramanian and N.
Venkataramani remained the vice presidents (city). Mr. S.R.
Jagannathan opted out. And Messrs D. Lakshminarayanaswami and N.
Srinivasan were nominated as Vice Presidents (districts).
Speaking to the presspersons later, Mr. Muthiah said the meeting
had taken place in a cordial atmosphere and added there were
quite a few constructive suggestions from the stalwarts.
He expressed satisfaction over the fact that as many as five
players from Tamil Nadu had represented the country in either
Test or one-day internationals during the season and several more
were staking a claim. He attributed the success to strong
coaching schemes and the number of tournaments being played in
the region.
Coming to international cricket, Mr. Muthiah felt that action
should be taken against the South African Cricket Board chief Mr.
Ali Bacher for his allegations about match-fixing, in violation
of the ICC's Code on Conduct.
Asia which generated about 70 per cent of ICC's revenues was
getting back only 20 per cent he said, and added much of it was
being spent in Europe and the U.S. where cricket was not a
factor. Mr. Muthiah wanted least 50 per cent of the total revenue
to come back to the Asian countries, especially the sub-
continent.
The following were elected as the Executive Members (City): Mr.
D. Sivanandam (TI Cycles SRC) 111 votes; Mr. G. Natarajan
