Assam Govt. seeks Rs. 500 cr. Central loan

GUWAHATI, JUNE 18.The Assam Government today asked the Centre for a Rs. 500 crore-loan for immediate financial relief.

The Chief Minister, Mr. Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, asked for the loan in a memorandum to the visiting Union Finance Minister Mr. Yashwant Sinha.

Mr Mahanta asked Mr. Sinha to write off Assam's outstanding debts to the Centre, which till the last financial year, were estimated to be Rs. 4,438 crores.

Mr. Mahanta thanked Mr. Sinha for his support in installing 1 lakh shallow tube wells last year. The Government plans to install 1 lakh shallow tube well this year too. Mr. Mahanta urged the Finance Minister to release sufficient funds so that Assam's finances could be stablised over the one year.
