MUL slashes prices

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, JUNE 24. Maruti Udyog (MUL) today slashed prices of its popular entry level Maruti-800 car, Omni van and its latest offering Wagon-R, the cut ranging from Rs. 25,000 in the case of Wagon-R to Rs. 10,000 in Maruti-EX model. MUL said the new prices would remain in effect for a limited period of three months. The new prices are ex-showroom prices.

Announcing the aggressive prices for a total of nine models of Maruti-800, Omni and Wagon-R, the company expressed the hope that the new prices would help revive the market and reposition the entry level price point for a limited period. In addition, the Wagon-R LX which has emerged as a strong player in its segment is being offered for a limited period at a more attractive price.

While the Maruti-800 standard car will now be available at Rs. 2.12 lakhs for the MPI version, the Maruti-800 standard Euro-I version will be offered at Rs. 1.99 lakhs. Another model Maruti- 800 EX will be available at Rs. 2.42 lakhs and the deluxe model will be priced at Rs. 2.59 lakhs. The Wagon-R LX has been repriced at Rs. 3.43 lakhs.

The Omni MPI model 5-seater van will now be available at Rs. 2.25 lakhs and its five-seater XL model will be priced at Rs. 2.33 lakhs. The 8-seater versions would cost Rs. 2.18 lakhs and Rs. 2.26 lakhs respectively.

According to MUL Managing Director, Mr. Jagdish Khattar, the new strategy would stimulate the market with aggressive prices. ``Maruti has once again played the role of the leader of the industry. Today, we have also reached the three million mark and I believe this initiative will inject buoyancy in the market,'' he said.

The price-cut in its entry level cars by MUL comes in the wake of the company losing share in the automobile market in the country as well as sluggish demand conditions.
