SINGAPORE, JUNE 24. Three Indian nationals, who robbed and assaulted their fellow countrymen working in Singapore, were each jailed for more than five years and caned 24 strokes, it was reported today.

Selvam Raja and Chandran Saravanan, both 24-year-old illegal immigrants, and Chelliah Saravanan, 23, a construction worker, pleaded guilty to robbing and hurting several Indians in addition to a Bangladeshi and a Sri Lankan, according to the Straits Times .

Pressing for a stiff sentence, the deputy public prosecutor, Ms. Sandra Tsao Chieh Chi, yesterday said the three were part of a gang which primarily targetted lone Indian nationals, taking money and valuables.

Chelliah, convicted on three charges of robbery and causing hurt, was sentenced to 69 months in jail.
